What's so bad about hate?

1) How is hate bad?
2) Is hate a conscious or unconscious feeling?
3) What is the meaning behind hate?

What is the meaning beind hate?

Andrew Sullivan’s article, “What’s so bad about hate” explains many types and ideas why people hate. Hate is a broad word, “A single word, after all, tells us less, not more” (Sullivan 1). It could be categorized as a prejudice, anger, and/or bias feeling. Yet, someone could hate because of religion, beliefs, and/or ideas. The word hate can be a simple or very harsh. The beginning of the article starts with a hate-crime to show people can become “hunters” and others become their “prey.” Sullivan said that made him wonder what exactly hate is and what our part as humans have in it? Those questions have never come across my mind and now that they have, it made me really think of the meaning behind the word hate. Hate is expressed by different situations, so I think there is more than one way to define hate. Sullivan said we have created the “isms” of hate including; sexism, racism, anti Semitism, and homophobia. I can see those all being true reasons for people to hate from the cases he stated and from witnessing most of them. I think hate has a different meaning depending on the situation. When someone has a legitimate reason to hate something or someone that would be understandable, but when they do not have an actual reason to hate I think the meaning changes. For example, many kids grow up hating this or hating that because their parents or friends influenced them, which is not a legit meaning. I personally do not like the word hate, I feel like it is such a hurtful word to say you hate someone or hate something. I feel the word dislike is a nicer way to express how you feel.

Lady Gaga and the Death of Sex

1 What is it that Camille Paglia wants instead?
2 How/why are people attracted to Lady Gaga's "manufactored personality?"
3 How has Lady Gaga destroyed the symbol of sex?

What is it that Camille Paglia wants instead?
Paglia’s article "Lady Gaga and the Death of Sex,” expresses how she feels what Lady Gaga has done to the symbol of sex in the music and celebrity life. Paglia describes her as a “manufactured” personality because of the over the top looks and styles she creates, I will never forget when Lady Gaga arrived at the Grammys in an egg that was so strange. I am all for being unique and creative in your own way, but Lady Gaga takes it to the extreme. As Paglia said “In Gaga’s manic miming of persona after persona, over-conceptualized and claustrophobic, we may have reached the limit of an era.” Most people have reached the limit with Gaga and would like to see her as herself. I believe she does these crazy looks and songs to try and get attention and stand out since she does not have a strong voice like the older sex icons. Paglia dates back to Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich who created a sophisticated look for glamour, and Madonna who was a major sex icon with her music and choreography. Paglia wants people to look back and realize how the women carried themselves as classy sex symbols instead of looking at Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga has changed the symbol of sex in a bad way from her raunchy lyrics; for instance, “take a bite of my bad girl meat.” A second way is from her stage performances when she tries to be sexy while being crushed by a falling chandelier or looking like she is dead. As Paglia says Lady Gaga is way over her head and needs to snap back to her real genre because the symbol she has created has brought the death of sex. I think Paglia wrote this to get her point across that Lady Gaga has taken sex to an extent by putting up this “manufactured” personality.

Is Google Making us Stupid?

1) Why do we all loose concentration while trying to read an article online?
2) Do people use the internet to avoid traditional reading and researching, for faster results?
3) What is Googles mission?

Why do we all loose concentration while trying to read an article online?

Why do we loose concentration while reading an article online?
I believe this is a relevant question and is important to the text because the Internet has changed our mind set on what reading is all about. The Internet now a day is an easy way out to find information, but most of the time, we loose concentration. Staying focused on one article is such a common struggle. The author Nicholas Carr even has trouble. He feels that his thinking is not the same while reading, causing him to drift after a few pages. I agree with Carr that the Internet has a bad influence in keeping concentration while reading. Trying to read through an entire article is hard. We all just want to find what we need and be finished, but that never happens. There are always so many words in the article, which makes our mind instantly begin to skim read because we know there are other sites we can look at. I think majority of people do that when they are trying to search for information, it comes natural. However, it is a bad habit. Concentration is lost from scrolling up and down trying to find what you need. Another way concentration is lost while reading an online article is from all the advertisements. While surfing the web Google advertises companies or their products on the sides, which can be very distracting. Even though the advertisements are annoying, it gets our mind thinking of other things to look up on Google. Next thing you know there will be 4 tabs up on your computer from looking up random things. I think the one major way concentration can be lost while reading on the Internet is from all the social networks. Many people have a habit going on Facebook, Twitter, or Insagram while trying to focus.
