2) Is hate a conscious or unconscious feeling?
3) What is the meaning behind hate?
What is the meaning beind hate?
Andrew Sullivan’s article,
“What’s so bad about hate” explains many types and ideas why people hate. Hate
is a broad word, “A single word, after all, tells us less, not more” (Sullivan
1). It could be categorized as a prejudice, anger, and/or bias feeling. Yet,
someone could hate because of religion, beliefs, and/or ideas. The word hate
can be a simple or very harsh. The beginning of the article starts with a
hate-crime to show people can become “hunters” and others become their “prey.”
Sullivan said that made him wonder what exactly hate is and what our part as
humans have in it? Those questions have never come across my mind and now that
they have, it made me really think of the meaning behind the word hate. Hate is
expressed by different situations, so I think there is more than one way to
define hate. Sullivan said we have created the “isms” of hate including;
sexism, racism, anti Semitism, and homophobia. I can see those all being true
reasons for people to hate from the cases he stated and from witnessing most of
them. I think hate has a different meaning depending on the situation. When someone
has a legitimate reason to hate something or someone that would be
understandable, but when they do not have an actual reason to hate I think the
meaning changes. For example, many kids grow up hating this or hating that
because their parents or friends influenced them, which is not a legit meaning.
I personally do not like the word hate, I feel like it is such a hurtful word
to say you hate someone or hate something. I feel the word dislike is a nicer
way to express how you feel.
