Thoughts on Peace in an Air Raid

Is peace really possible to find during wartime?
During war, what role did women have?
Does a gun/firearm really help achieve freedom?

During war, what role did women have?

Virginia Woolfs article “Thoughts on Peace in an Air Raid” was written during World War II. Wolf began her article with immediate feelings of fear including, good imagery and description. She made it feel as if you were there preparing for war. Men were the defenders while women had no rights during this era of war. As Woolf says, “Arms are not given to Englishwomen either to fight the enemy or defend herself.” Men and women had no equal rights. Fighting was strictly a job for men and women has no any role in war until later years when the women’s right act began. Women only had one role in life, which was a housewife. The duties including; cleaning, cooking, sewing, and taking care of the children. They were very limited to what they could do especially during war. Woolf states, “Women have not a word to say in politics.” “There is no woman in the Cabinet; nor in any responsible post. All the idea-makers who are in a position to make ideas effective are men. That is a thought that damps thinking and encourages irresponsibility.” I believe it was wrong for men to be more superior then women. Woman’s thoughts and ideas were never acknowledged, since men felt they were only good for being housewives. When women started to have a voice, it made such a big impact on men. They began to realize women could be independent and do a mans job. Women now have roles in war and can help fight for freedom.
